Emergency Medicine Track

Residents may choose this elective track during their first year.  Second and third year electives are designed to provide knowledge and experience to prepare a Family Medicine physician to competently practice in a small community Emergency Department.

 

Especially in rural areas, many Family Medicine physicians include emergency practice in combination with an office practice, and many choose emergency medicine as their single practice focus.  Rotations build skill and confidence in emergency procedures, policies pertinent to the emergency setting, team leadership involving pre-hospital and hospital staff, and research of a question pertinent to the emergency practice.   

 

When possible, the rural emergency track resident will become an instructor for ACLS, PALS, ALSO, or another emergency course.  After completion of the track, the resident receives a program letter indicating their curricular area of concentration within the Family Medicine curriculum.
