Our dedicated faculty take a hands-on approach to teaching, and while our preceptors are approachable and enjoy open interaction, there's nothing casual about their attitude toward quality medicine and a challenging curriculum. But when the work day is finished, they plunge into a variety of pastimes or into serious relaxation in one of the most beautiful natural areas left in the world... the Upper Peninsula of Michigan!
Faculty
Our faculty physicians are all board certified and each bring unique strengths and interests to the program. As you'll see in the biographies of our faculty, the scope of interests outside of medicine is truly global, but our priorities center around our families. Life in Marquette is about balance, and we strive to structure the residency program so that our residents receive excellent education and achieve a semblance of balance as well.
The faculty meets weekly to discuss the operations and plans for the program, with the chief residents helping to make this a time for honest exchange of ideas, sharing and growth. Faculty work sessions serve to maintain the sense of shared purpose in setting long-range goals. The faculty, individually and collectively, have made a commitment to the program and community.

WILLIAM M. SHORT, M.D.
In April 2011, William M. Short, M.D., was named CEO and Community Assistant Dean of the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine - Upper Peninsula Region. He was previously the Director of the Marquette Family Medicine Residency Program, and a member of the program’s fourth graduating class. Dr. Short spent 12 years as an Assistant Director of the Marquette Family Medicine Residency Program prior to his promotion as Director.
Dr. Short has overseen two ACGME residency program reviews, receiving the highest rating after each evaluation. He is actively involved in the oversight of every aspect of the educational program. In addition, Dr. Short has added qualifications in Addiction Medicine and promotes resident education in this field. His unique insight in addiction management provides an exceptional added benefit to residents graduating from this program.
Keeping current on residency training requirements and developing innovative methods of integrating change into the program remains a satisfying aspect of Dr. Short's experience. He also takes great pleasure in the relationships developed with residents during their training and beyond.
On a personal note, Dr. Short is married and has four children. He enjoys the out of doors, especially hiking, biking, and cross country skiing. He also enjoys spending time with his family at their cottage in the western portion of the Upper Peninsula.

STUART K. JOHNSON, DO
In April 2011, Stuart K. Johnson, D.O., was named Program Director of the Marquette Family Medicine Residency Program. His position prior to the promotion was Director of Osteopathic Medical Education and assistant program director.
Dr. Johnson has a special interest in promoting the principles of osteopathic medicine. His belief in these principles has instilled a desire to promote osteopathic medical education in the residency and throughout the community.
Dr. Johnson is also involved in directing the PALS course and assists in instructing the ALSO and Advanced Airway courses offered to the medical community.
He completed the Primary Care Faculty Development Fellowship Program through Michigan State University in 2004 and a National Institute of Program Directors Fellowship in June of 2008.
His clinical interests involve Osteopathic Manual Medicine, Obstetrics, Disease Prevention, and Hospice and Palliative Medicine. In 2010 he was named Associate Medical Director of the Lake Superior Hospice and in 2011 he attended the Palliative Care Education and Practice through Harvard Medical School. He carries a certificate of added qualification in Hospice and Palliative Medicine.
Dr. Johnson is involved in local church and community activities. He and his wife enjoy raising their five children. His interests include woodworking, remodeling, cycling and outdoor activities.

RYAN BRANG, M.D.
Born and raised in Minnesota, Dr. Brang then completed his Undergraduate Biology Degree from the University of Wisconsin in River Falls. He went to Ross University for medical school and had the opportunity to spend his clinical years in New York City. The Midwest called him back, though, and he completed his Family Medicine Residency here at UP Health System - Marquette.
It was here in Marquette that he met his wife and fellow resident Katie Brang. After completion of residency, the Brangs moved to Ashland, WI to join a small independent practice. This was a rural family practice that included obstetrics, inpatient medical and psychiatric care, nursing home medicine and a busy outpatient schedule. Although he will continue to practice full scope family medicine, Dr. Brang has a particular interest in obstetrics and is excited for the opportunity to now be in a teaching role.
Dr. Brang can usually be found outdoors during his free time. He is happy to be back in Marquette, where he can spend those spare moments mountain biking, snow biking, camping, skiing and hiking with his wife, his daughter Sonja and their Huskador Jake.

SUZANNE CLARKE, M.D.
Dr. Clarke is an Assistant Director at the Residency. She was born and raised in rural lower Michigan, receiving her bachelor degree from Albion College with majors in Biology and Psychology. She received her medical degree from Michigan State University College of Human Medicine (MSU-CHM) on the UP Campus and completed her Family Practice Residency training at the Mid-Michigan Regional Medical Center in Midland. Dr. Clarke is a Diplomate of the American Board of Family Practice and completed a Primary Care Faculty Development Fellowship at MSU. She is also a member of the American Academy of Family Practice, the Society for Teachers of Family Medicine and the Christian Medical and Dental Association.
Dr. Clarke practiced the full spectrum of rural medicine in Ironwood, Michigan, for seven years. Precepting medical student rotations in Ironwood led to her interest in teaching and she then joined the Residency Program in 2000. Special interests include Resident well-being, family-centered maternity care, rural health care issues, women’s health care and international medical missions. She has been involved with the residents in short term medical mission trips to Guatemala, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic. She particularly enjoys the interactions with the medical students and residents and sees them as an “opportunity to help develop tomorrow’s physicians.”
Dr. Clarke’s personal interests include singing, swimming, taking walks with her dog, Roxi, and just about anything else that takes advantage of the beauty of God’s Country!

RALPH OLSON, Ph.D., BCBA-D
Dr.
Olson grew up in northwest Indiana and received
a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Wabash College. Dr. Olson received a
master’s degree in psychology from Idaho State University and a Ph.D. in
clinical child psychology from West Virginia University. He completed a doctoral
internship at Richard Hutchings Psychiatric Center in Syracuse, New York. Dr.
Olson is a licensed psychologist and board-certified behavior analyst.
Dr.
Olson joined the Residency Program in 2011. He has a private psychology practice in Marquette and prior to that was
employed at Pathways Community Mental Health for 19 years in various clinical,
supervisory, and organizational roles.
Outside
of work, Dr. Olson enjoys hiking, snowshoeing, 4-wheeling, fishing, mountain
biking, welding, kayaking, and the Marquette Symphony.

BO ROWAN, D.O.
Dr. Rowan joined the Marquette Family Medicine Residency faculty in July, 2012. He graduated from the residency program in 2011, and then spent a year in Erie, PA, honing his OMT skills during his neuromusculoskeletal medicine fellowship. He is happy to return to Marquette, where he also spent time during his undergraduate training at Northern Michigan University.
His special interests include osteopathic manual medicine, office procedures, research, OB and pediatrics. He also enjoys helping patients with management of their chronic conditions, and has a fledgling interest in nutritional medicine.
Dr. Rowan, who is originally from the Detroit area, is a big sports fan and likes all of the Detroit teams. He and his wife, who is a native Yooper, like being back in the Upper Peninsula. They spend time together hiking, biking, snowshoeing, and going to the U.P. State Fair. The only time they don’t agree is when the Packers are playing the Lions.

BRIAN WAITE, M.D.
Dr. Waite joined the faculty of the Marquette Family Residency Program in February, 2008. He is a former Marquette resident, having graduated in 1999. In the interim, he practiced in a small Family Medicine group on Whidbey Island, in the Puget Sound in Washington State. His undergraduate training was in Anthropology at Washington State University, and he received his MD from the University of Washington School of Medicine. His intent was always to practice Family Medicine in a rural setting, and he participated in the WAMI (Washington, Alaska, Montana, Idaho) rural medicine track in medical school.
His special interests include EMR/EHR, chronic disease management, billing and coding, and implementing the concepts of TransforMed and the Future of Family Medicine, which focus on the quality of the delivery of health care.
He and his wife are very happy to be back in the U.P. and their two daughters love the outdoor activities available. He enjoys hiking, camping, kayaking, snowshoeing and cross country skiing, and is still perfecting his igloo building techniques.
Residency Program Administration
SUSAN F. TINCKNELL, C-TAGME
Susan is the Residency Administrator for our program. She has
worked within the health system for 25 years; more than 16 of those have been with
the Residency. Susan ensures that residents are fulfilling all required
curriculum to complete their family medicine training. She is also responsible
for all aspects of the recruitment process including receiving and reviewing
ERAS applications. Her knowledge of the overall recruitment
experience ensures all applicants receive a worthwhile interview in Marquette.
Susan became Michigan’s first family medicine administrator to
be certified in graduate medical education training administration with added
qualifications in family medicine by the National Board of Training
Administrators of Graduate Medical Education (TAGME). TAGME is a certification
process to assess the expertise and competence needed to successfully manage
graduate medical education programs. She currently serves as a member of the
TAGME Family Medicine Review Board which entails writing and scoring assessments.
Susan is a member of the Association of Family Medicine
Administration (AFMA), served a four-year term on the AFMA Board of Directors,
and was board president in 2011-12. She has been a national presenter at
the ACOFP Program Director Workshop, Residency Program Solutions Conference,
the National Center for the Evaluation of Family Medicine Residency Program
Annual Conference, the Residency Administrative Development Conference, and
regional conferences. In 2011 she was named a finalist for the ACGME’s “GME
Program Coordinator Excellence” Award.
Susan previously attended Northern Michigan University and is
currently re-enrolled and will receive an associate degree with a concentration
in communications in May 2015. In addition, Susan is expected to receive
a bachelor’s degree in communications in 2016. She is a native of Michigan's
Upper Peninsula and enjoys flower gardening, traveling, playing tennis and
watching her teenage boys play sports.
