A Message from the Residency Director - Stuart Johnson, D.O.

johnsos1.jpg
All of us involved in the Family Medicine Residency Program here in Marquette, Michigan are very proud of what we have accomplished since our inception in 1979. We have graduated over 180, with the vast majority practicing family medicine in rural America – most here in the northern Midwest.

We take great pride in our ability to tailor training to the individual needs of each resident. Getting the training one wants – and needs - is critical to our success as the changing face of primary medicine health care continues to occur. We have taken great pride in the development of our own version of a Patient Centered Medical Home, with Practice Partner EMR assisting in our patient management.

Sending residents during their second year to rural sites for a month has proven to be remarkably successful in giving a true flavor of this kind of medicine at the core of our mission. Many of these sites are run by alumni of the program, providing a continuous and strong bond to the training program. We look forward to continuing to be innovative as we adjust to the needs of our health care system. Being strongly supported by UP Health System and it’s Accountable Care Organization – Superior Health Partners – remains essential to our growth and vitality.

Having dedicated much of my career in health care to the success of this program, I remain confident that we will continue to train the family physicians needed for the care of our population for decades to come.

Marquette Family Medicine Residency Program

The Marquette Family Medicine Residency Program is an unopposed, dually accredited family medicine residency program located in beautiful Marquette, Michigan. Our community-based, three-year training program trains both allopathic and osteopathic physicians following Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) and American Osteopathic Association (AOA) guidelines. Graduates of the program are qualified to manage the full spectrum of family medicine.

Founded in 1979 to provide young doctors with medical experience in the rural setting, the program has graduated 180 with many alumni practicing in rural Midwest locations.

The program’s intimate size allows for tailored training to meet the individual needs of each resident. Training takes place at UP Health System - Marquette a Duke LifePoint Hospital, within the clinic as well as at rural sites throughout the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

Curriculum tara heart.jpg

Each year of the UP Health System Family Medicine Residency is divided into 13 four week blocks. Through a combination of required and elective rotations, a resident gains a broad-based education in all medical specialty areas. UP Health System - Marquette is used for most inpatient rotations, while significant time is spent at in Marquette at the Peninsula Medical Center with community physicians for the outpatient rotations. Time may be individually arranged elsewhere to meet special requests or needs, and rural family medicine electives in the Upper Peninsula are strongly encouraged and a rural family medicine rotation in the Upper Peninsula is scheduled for all second-year residents.

Design for Success

First year residents start their training with a four week introduction to residency. This rotation is designed with hands-on experiences to prepare new residents for the predictable, but critical, care situations they will soon face. Residents are guided to develop a relationship with health care team members and learn how the team most effectively works together to provide excellent patient care in the hospital and in the Family Medicine Center.

Visits to community support agencies, hands on review of examinations skills, and coaching with hospital information systems all actively prepare residents for their new role.

* Thirteen four-week blocks for rotations per year

Rural Experience

At UP Health System - Marquette we are proud of our rural training. Over 90% of our graduates are practicing in federally designated rural areas. To improve resident rural experience, second-year residents do a one-month rural rotation in one of many rural communities.

Osteopathic

As part of UP Health System's commitment to quality osteopathic medical education we offer a three-year family medicine residency.

The first year focuses on building knowledge and skills in patient care based on the philosophy of osteopathic medicine. Manual skills are developed in clinical settings as well as monthly didactic sessions and hospital rounds.

Further emphasis is placed on developing competence in medical knowledge, patient care, professionalism, interpersonal and communication skills, practice-based learning and system-based practice. Manual medicine clinic volume supports experiential learning as residents continue to enhance these skills during their second and third year of training.

These experiences, and enthusiastic support from faculty and community physicians, help residents graduate from the program as complete osteopathic family physicians.

Our dedicated faculty take a hands-on approach to teaching, and while our preceptors are approachable and enjoy open interaction, there's nothing casual about their attitude toward quality medicine and a challenging curriculum. But when the work day is finished, they plunge into a variety of pastimes or into serious relaxation in one of the most beautiful natural areas left in the world... the Upper Peninsula of Michigan!

Faculty

Our faculty physicians are all board certified and each bring unique strengths and interests to the program. As you'll see in the biographies of our faculty, the scope of interests outside of medicine is truly global, but our priorities center around our families. Life in Marquette is about balance, and we strive to structure the residency program so that our residents receive excellent education and achieve a semblance of balance as well.

The faculty meets weekly to discuss the operations and plans for the program, with the chief residents helping to make this a time for honest exchange of ideas, sharing and growth. Faculty work sessions serve to maintain the sense of shared purpose in setting long-range goals. The faculty, individually and collectively, have made a commitment to the program and community.

RYAN BRANG, M.D.

Born and raised in Minnesota, Dr. Brang then completed his Undergraduate Biology Degree from the University of Wisconsin in River Falls. He went to Ross University for medical school and had the opportunity to spend his clinical years in New York City. The Midwest called him back, though, and he completed his Family Medicine Residency here at UP Health System - Marquette.

It was here in Marquette that he met his wife and fellow resident Katie Brang. After completion of residency, the Brangs moved to Ashland, WI to join a small independent practice. This was a rural family practice that included obstetrics, inpatient medical and psychiatric care, nursing home medicine and a busy outpatient schedule. Although he will continue to practice full scope family medicine, Dr. Brang has a particular interest in obstetrics and is excited for the opportunity to now be in a teaching role.

Dr. Brang can usually be found outdoors during his free time. He is happy to be back in Marquette, where he can spend those spare moments mountain biking, snow biking, camping, skiing and hiking with his wife, his daughter Sonja and their Huskador Jake.

I was born and raised in the suburbs of Baltimore, Maryland.  I attended the University of Maryland, College Park where I earned a B.S. in Physiology and Neurobiology. During college, I was treasurer of a pre-health fraternity Delta Epsilon Mu and served as a chemistry tutor for athletes, Go Terps!

I attended medical school at Ross University located on the beautiful nature island of Dominica in the West Indies.  After completing basic sciences, I enjoyed exploring the eastern seaboard for my clinical clerkships. As a result of the extensive traveling during my 3rd and 4th year of medical school, I look forward to spending the next 3 years in beautiful Marquette, Michigan. I am confident the unopposed Marquette Family Medicine Residency Program will provide me with excellent training that will help shape my future as a physician.

In my spare time I enjoy cooking, watching movies and traveling and I am excited to see what Marquette has to offer.

I grew up in a very small town in northeastern Michigan. I enjoyed a wonderful childhood, growing up on the shore of Lake Huron. Summers were filled with swimming, softball, bonfires and bike rides. From a young age, my parents instilled in me the importance of community and caring for others.

After high school, I attended the University of Michigan where I studied chemistry. There, I continued to remain connected to my community through volunteering at Mott Children’s Hospital, participating in the Women in Science and Engineering Program and performing research in an organic chemistry lab. Undergrad led me to medical school at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. There I was accepted into the Rural Physician Program, which aims to send students interested in rural medicine to train in Marquette. I spent my clinical years in Marquette and fell in love with the atmosphere of the town.

This summer I got married and my husband Nate and I are happy to make Marquette our home with our two dogs. We always take the opportunity to hike the trails around Marquette, discover a new restaurant or spend time on the beach of Lake Superior.

I grew up in Michigan, in a small farming community near Lake Huron.  I left the Lower Peninsula to attend Northern Michigan University. During my undergraduate career at NMU, I become interested in the fascinating mechanisms of our human physiology, psychology, and our social interactions.  It was clear then that a career in family medicine – learning how we function on the individual cellular level, to interacting with each other as friends, family members, coworkers, and community members – would be for me. Growing up in a small rural city allowed me to appreciate the importance of community. Not only do we stand to learn a lot from one another but also our physical health remains tied in how we view and think of ourselves, in which the people around us play no small role.  I hope to learn from and be a beneficial community member to the people of the Upper Peninsula.

Many of my extracurricular activities revolve around outdoor interests, gardening, hiking, camping, snowshoeing, skiing, and spending time with our dog.  I am eager to experience the beautiful landscape of the UP and become a partner in health with the community of Marquette.

Born and raised in Munising, I didn’t always appreciate the Upper Peninsula and all it has to offer until I moved away for medical school. After high school I attended the UP Health System School of Radiography and worked as an x-ray and CT tech in Munising while completing my bachelor of science degree at Northern Michigan University. I then attended Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine where I stayed in metro Detroit for all four years, choosing to go to their Macomb University Center campus and then Henry Ford Macomb for my clinical years. Although I knew going into medical school that I wanted to go into family medicine and come back and serve the UP, my time away from home only further confirmed that.

Through the pre-med program at NMU I was set up with a preceptorship with Dr. William Short. During that time I learned about the residency program at MGH and knew I would love to end up there in the end. During my fourth year of medical school I spent two months in the UP and one was spent with the residency program, it felt like home in every way and I knew it would be the perfect fit for me. Although I am a born and raised Yooper, I will still be hoping for some milder winters to come while in Marquette!

My husband Ben was also born and raised in Munising and is excited to the back in the UP as well! Our daughters, Eva and Emma, were born in Detroit during medical school and will now get to experience the beauty of our new home. We also have two Scottish Terriers who we’ve had with us since we lived in Marquette while attending NMU, they are looking forward to fetching sticks in Lake Superior this summer and doing some hiking, things they have missed dearly!

I was born and raised here in Marquette and, after a brief stint downstate, have returned to the UP to continue my medical training.

After graduating from Marquette Senior High School, I spent four years in Ann Arbor at the University of Michigan. While there, I was a four-year member of the Michigan Marching Band and Men’s Basketball Band, which gave my pre-med life some much-needed balance.

After graduating from U-M, I attended the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. Although I still bleed Maize and Blue, the relationships I made and experiences I had ensured that MSU and East Lansing will always have a special place in my heart. After all, it is where I met my wife Jennifer, and right down the street from where my daughter, Natalie, was born.

In my free time I enjoy cooking, golf, photography, and being outdoors with my family (and our husky-shar pei mix, Lee). My wife and I are also trying our hands at gardening. We are all looking forward to taking advantage of all that Marquette has to offer.

I am very excited to bring my passion for family medicine back to Marquette. Over the past few years, I have developed a strong interest in preventive medicine, mental health, sports medicine, and osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM). The Marquette Family Medicine Residency, with its supportive faculty and broad spectrum of training, is a perfect fit for me as I continue my medical training.

I grew up in the small town of Michigamme, 45 miles west of Marquette, MI. Living in a very rural town I came to appreciate the importance of a “jack of all trades.” I was fortunate enough to have been raised by both a blue-collar family and community that had many of them. One such person was my family physician.  Located 30 miles away in L’Anse was the physician who delivered me, stitched up my head on several occasions, and took care of all the other illnesses and injuries that crept up along the way. He was among a small group of physicians that essentially adopted the town, as well as the surrounding communities including my own.  He was charged with guiding and delivering a wide breadth of care for many patients. I admired that greatly and very early on was convinced that I wanted to someday be a rural physician.

Following high school I attended Michigan Technological University where I studied general biology for 2 years then transferred to Northern Michigan University to finish a Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology. Following graduation I attended Michigan State University - College of Human Medicine. I completed my clinical training at Marquette General Hospital, now UP Health System - Marquette.  During this time I found that there were many areas of medicine I could see myself practicing in. Toward the end of my third year I narrowed it down to medicine versus surgery.  I ended up choosing surgery and started my post-graduate training in general surgery.  A few months into my surgical training I slowly began to realize that while I enjoyed the medical management of surgical issues, I also strongly desired to be involved in the management of all other medical issues, not just those of a surgical nature.

It was my great fortune that the Marquette Family Medicine Residency Program had an unexpected opening.  Having spent my clinical years in Marquette, I already knew the great breadth of pathology I would be exposed to, as well as the excellent faculty which would guide my development into a complete physician. I had no doubt that I could get the training needed to be the throwback type of physician that I grew up admiring. Having briefly trained at a large university hospital, I developed an appreciation for the unopposed atmosphere that trainees in this residency get to learn in. Not having other residents standing in the way of getting procedures or managing ICU patients is a huge advantage, as well as being able to speak directly with seasoned consulting specialists regarding management of patients. This made my decision to apply here a no-brainer.

My interests and hobbies include watching sports of all kinds.  I especially enjoy watching Michigan State football, playing league softball, golfing and hunting. Recently I have been getting into “big-lake” fishing, and plan to begin cross-country skiing this winter. The Marquette area is the perfect place for those interested in outdoor activities, which makes the location of this program a major strength. Recently my wife and I welcomed a baby boy into the world. We are fortunate to be able to raise him in such a great community, and hope to continue to expand and raise our family here long after residency is completed.

I grew up in the Upper Peninsula along the shores of Lake Michigan. My upbringing helped define my lifelong love of the woods and the water as well as cemented the Upper Peninsula’s place in my life. I can no longer imagine living elsewhere and am thrilled to be able to stay here for my residency training.

After completing my bachelor of science degree in Biochemistry at Northern Michigan University, I went on to study medicine at Michigan State University’s College of Human Medicine. My medical school experience was enriched by the privilege of coming back to the Upper Peninsula for my clinical training. I completed most of my clinical rotations at UP Health System - Marquette. It has been a joy and an honor to serve the people of the Upper Peninsula and I look forward to continuing to serve during residency.

While completing my schooling I also completed my family. In 2005 I married my husband, Francois. During medical school our two children Ian and Anna were born. We enjoy spending time outdoors hiking, biking and swimming. We look forward to putting down roots in the community.

I was born in New York City but I grew up in Michigan and attended undergraduate school at Michigan State University. It was during my time at MSU that, through volunteering and community service work, I began to develop an interest in healthcare. After completing my BS in human biology, I left Michigan to return to New York where I attended the New York Institute of Technology for graduate school.  After receiving my MS in clinical nutrition I began medical school, having been accepted to the Keith B. Taylor Global Scholars Program at St. George’s University School of Medicine. I spent the first year of medical school in Newcastle, England, while my second year was spent on the island of Grenada in the Caribbean. Having seen the differences between the practice and delivery of medicine in such diverse areas, it opened my eyes as to how and where I wanted to practice medicine. I did my third and fourth years of medical school in Maryland and New York, where I started to realize what kind of medicine it was that I wanted to pursue.
After returning from my interview in Marquette I was very impressed by the breadth of the program and the opportunities it provided me.  The unopposed aspect of the program was a large determining factor, but there were many other features that I felt were also important.  One area that stood out to me in particular was the atmosphere, which was very collegial, with an impressive faculty to resident ratio comprised of caring and enthusiastic staff and physicians.  In a hospital environment where situations can become very tense, it is comforting to know that the people you are most closely associated with are also the people you can most certainly rely on.  In addition to the people and the facilities, the city of Marquette itself struck me as intrinsically beautiful and I could immediately picture myself relishing my time outside of work in such a place.
In my spare time I enjoy cooking, long distance running and weight/resistance training.  Since I am now in Marquette, biking and skiing are two sports I hope to incorporate into my exercise repertoire.  I have a physically active lifestyle, so I am looking forward to all of the things that Marquette has to offer me.

I was born and raised in the Upper Peninsula about one hour away from Marquette in the small town of Rapid River, Michigan. While spending my entire childhood and adolescent years in the U.P. I gained a true appreciation for the small town, rural lifestyle. After a basketball injury during high school required me to undergo knee surgery, I knew I wanted to become a doctor and the journey began.

Life after high school led me to Michigan State University where I received a Bachelor of Science degree in Physiology with a specialization in Bioethics, Humanities, and Society. I was planning to take a one year hiatus from school prior to attending medical school, but instead I pursued a second Bachelor of Science degree from Michigan State in the field of Human Biology. It was after receiving my second degree that I enrolled in medical school at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Erie, Pennsylvania. When I began my clinical rotations during medical school, I was initially interested in pursuing a career in general surgery. But after my first few rotations I came to value the long-term relationships family physicians have with their patients. The admiration of these relationships is why I chose family medicine.

While visiting the residency program at UP Health System - Marquete, I was impressed with the welcoming nature of the faculty and staff. I also had a sense the faculty and staff genuinely cared about the lives and well-being of residents both while working in the hospital/clinic as well as life away from medicine. The fact that the program is unopposed, prepares physicians to practice in rural areas, and is close to home all contributed to my decision to choose UP Health System  to further my training.

Some of my interests and hobbies include the Detroit Red Wings, Michigan State basketball, fishing, hunting, and almost anything else outdoors. Although my wife and I are familiar with the Marquette area, we are excited to have the opportunity to thoroughly experience all the recreational activities the area provides.

I was born and raised in Grenada, the second most southern island of the Caribbean, formerly a colony of Great Britain. As a child, I had the unique opportunity of observing both my parents in the primary health care field – my mother especially, as she placed the utmost emphasis on effectively communicating with her patients.  Observing medicine being practiced in a third-world setting and here in the US has sensitized me and allowed me to appreciate the thoroughness and systematic nature of Western medicine.

After completing my pre-medical and medical school curriculum at St. George’s University, I was engaged in clinical research at The Brooklyn Hospital Center. Research has been integral in my training and has helped foster a concrete connection between the basic sciences and clinical sciences. Research has made me keenly aware of the importance of evidence-based practice.

Family Medicine is my passion. The lack of monotony and wide scope of pathology and health issues to which family medicine physicians are exposed fits my personality perfectly. Additionally, I strongly believe that the sort of patient interaction that family medicine affords would allow me to really positively affect my patients’ health.

My interests and hobbies are diverse. I am a health and fitness enthusiast, I drag race professionally, and growing up on an island, I naturally indulge in the outdoors – swimming, scuba, sailing, hiking and cycling.

Residency in Marquette is a dream come true. At the end of my training I would not only have the satisfaction of a first-class education at the prestigious Marquette General, but also I would have had ample time to fully embrace the Yooper Culture (white-cod diet and snow-action included).  I look forward to making a valuable contribution and learning everything that the Marquette General Family Medicine Residency Program has to offer.

I was born in Albany, New York and have since lived in several cities in New York as well as in Colorado, Florida, Arizona, California, Massachusetts, and New Jersey.  I went to Cal for my undergraduate studies where I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Molecular and Cell Biology.  I got a Masters in Medical Sciences clear across the country  from Boston University before going leaving the country to go to  St. George's University for medical school.

I've been all around and am happy to say I will soon be adding Michigan to the list of states I have lived in.  Working in an unopposed family medicine program with a  supportive environment in a tight knit community fits me like a glove.  I look forward to helping and getting to know the community around Marquette as well as being around more Green Bay Packers fans!

I was born in a small town in India, and moved to US during my high school years. During my undergraduate education at University of Illinois at Chicago, I volunteered at the Cook County Hospital in the ED, to dip my toes in the healthcare system. The volunteer experience along with the science focused education during the undergraduate studies gave me a strong push toward a career in medicine. A year later I was enrolled in School of Medicine of St. Georges University, located in the beautiful Caribbean island of Grenada. During my two years on the island, I not only learned about anatomy, physiology and all the coursework of basic sciences, but also challenges faced by the physicians in the process of delivering healthcare in a developing country.
After completing the basic sciences, I moved to New York City for my clinical experience, where I had a chance to experience various fields and challenges and rewards associated with delivering healthcare in inner city neighborhoods. During my clinical years, I came to realize the importance of Family Physicians and the important role they play in the complex US healthcare system. Given my experience in New York City and in Grenada, I decided to pursue Family Medicine as a career as it affords me the chance to form life-long relationships with patients.  Another aspect of family medicine that appeals to me is the wide diversity of care that is routinely practiced, which ranges from treating acute illnesses to chronic diseases; and probably most importantly preventive medicine. I chose the Marquette Family Medicine Residency Program because I was attracted to the benefits of its unopposed structure and the benefit of excellent teaching it would provide, along with the pleasant nature of residents, attendings and the hospital support staff in general. I also was drawn by the beautiful landscape, serene lake and the small town character of the community. I am truly looking forward to being of service to the hospital and community as a good doctor and a responsible member of the community.
Given the amazing beauty of the landscape and the opportunity it affords, I would like to explore the natural surroundings of the town in the free time. During the warmer months I can be found running, hiking or just spending some quiet time by the beach and also looking forward to learning how to ski and skate during the winter months.  I am excited to begin my residency in Marquette and look forward to the many joys and challenges that may come my way and be part of this community.

KATIE BRANG, M.D.

Katie Brang grew up in Traverse City, MI but always knew that the Upper Peninsula would be her home. She left Michigan to complete a BA at Carleton College in Northfield, MN. She completed her Family Medicine Residency in Marquette as well.  After graduation, she and her husband, Dr. Ryan Brang, moved to Ashland, WI to practice full-scope rural family medicine. Although they loved Ashland, the UP drew them home and they returned in 2014 to take faculty positions with the Marquette Family Medicine Residency.

An avid Nordic skier, trail runner and mountain biker, Dr. Brang spends her spare moments enjoying the many miles of trails in the area. She is happiest when her husband Ryan, infant daughter Sonja and adventure dog Jake can join her in the woods.
